iOS 12 Compatibility List For iPhone, iPad And iPod Touch

When Apple announces iOS updates during WWDC events, all of us know that some devices won’t receive the new update due to the compatibility issues.

This year, though, the company has surprised everyone with a pleasant announcement. The iOS 12 update will be available on all devices that were supported by iOS 11 update last year.

This new trend in the software world is now going to affect the expectations of people. On the other hand, Apple’s competitors will also have to up their game to be able to keep up with the rising demands.

Let’s discuss this topic more in the following post. But before that, check out the list of iOS 12 supported devices below.

iOS vs. Other operating systems – What happens next?

Even though Apple didn’t announce any ground-breaking iOS features in this year’s WWDC, their big announcement to support old iOS devices has raised the bar in the mobile phone industry.

When we talk about Android OS, Google hasn’t managed to find any solution to the fragmentation issue. It’s still a big issue on all Android devices, as the users feel frustrated when they don’t receive regular OS updates for their devices.

And this is why I feel the Apple announcement is going to change the game in end user’s favor. Earlier, many companies were reluctant in sending regular updates to its supported devices, but, now, we should expect them to follow the Apple path soon.

Otherwise, it won’t be too long when we see people switching to iPhones and other Apple devices. And then, it’d become difficult for those companies to regain their market share.

So, what happens next?

Well, as said before, it will push other companies to think outside of the box and find a better solution to deliver software updates to the compatible devices.

The fragmentation issue will continue to be there as long as different companies use Android OS to run their devices, but there has to be a way out. It has been a long time since the launch of first Android device, and people are still talking about the same issue to date.

With iOS 12, Apple has also suggested that they care about the people who are still enjoying old iPhone or iPad devices, and the company has no plans to abandon these iOS users.

It means the competitors will also need to focus on the hardware. They will have to come up with new devices that can last for at least 4-5 years if not more.

I’m not sure if there’s any solution available to these problems, but let’s hope to hear something concrete and reliable from Google and other Android phone manufacturers during their mega launch events.

Regarding Apple, I think they are way ahead in the competition right now, and it would not be easy for others to catch up with them anytime soon.

For iOS users, it’s a big treat as well, and I hope Apple continues with this strategy in the future. When you spend hard-earned money on Apple’s device or any other gadget for that matter, you do expect it to last as much as it can.

So, it’s a great initiative by Apple to release a major software update, which is also compatible with 5-6 generations old devices. Kudos to them for such a marvelous job!

Now, let’s have a look at some of the frequently asked questions regarding the compatibility of iOS 12 –

How to check the iOS 12 compatibility for my device?

You can refer to the above table to check the compatibility of your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Apart from that, there is no official way or tool to confirm it for your device.

The only thing you can do is to try requesting new software update from Apple’s servers on your device. If the update is ready to download, it means your device is compatible with new software.

If the device is not compatible, you should see a notification on your screen saying your software is up to date.

Will the iOS 12 update slow down my iPhone?

No, it won’t slow down your device.

In fact, Apple has assured that the latest update will improve the performance on old devices. The devices like iPhone 5s and iPhone SE are also capable of handling an advanced mobile operating system like iOS 12.

Do I need to pay anything to receive iOS 12 on my Apple devices?

Apple has officially announced that the iOS 12 update is a free update, and you don’t have to shell out a single penny to get this update on your device.

How to download iOS 12 on iPhone?

You can download this update like any other software update you receive on your iPhone.

In case you’re new to the iOS system, follow these steps –

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap General and go to Software Update.
  3. Wait for a few seconds so that the system can check for the availability of iOS 12 update.
  4. Once the update appears on your screen, tap the Download and Install option.

iOS Software Update

It should take a few minutes for the iPhone to complete this task.

Alternatively, you can also download and install this update using iTunes. Just connect your device to Mac and open the iTunes software.

The software will look for new iOS 12 update, which is compatible with your device.

What should I do if my device is not compatible with iOS 12?

It’s time to upgrade!

Yes, you are using an old hardware device, which no longer supports the technological advancement of this period.

As discussed earlier in this post, you can continue to enjoy the device with iOS 11 software if you want. There is no real harm as such except battery issues, but I think you should consider upgrading to a new iPhone or iPad.

The experience you get on new devices is not comparable with old generation devices. Therefore, it makes sense to upgrade to something like iPhone X or upcoming iOS devices.

Alright, that’s it for this post now!
