How To Fix Location Not Available Error On iMessage

iMessage’s location sharing feature is quite useful when you want to stay connected with your friends and family members.

However, in recent times, many users have faced some issues similar to the ‘Location Not Available’ error on iMessage, which probably appears after downloading and installing the iOS 11 update on iPhones.

Since it’s not a widely-known issue, there is no official solution to solve the error. However, you can try some workaround techniques that might help in finding the location of the desired person.

So, let’s see how to fix this problem on your Apple iPhone.

Fix Location Not Available Error on iMessage

In the following post, I have shared some useful tips and tricks to solve the location error on iMessage.

1. Enable Location Sharing on iPhone

That’s the first thing you should do when you see the location not available error pop-up on your screen!

You should check whether the location sharing service is active or not on the device. If it’s not enabled, you won’t be able to see the location of your friend in iMessage app.

So, how do you enable this service? Check out the following steps –

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your Apple ID profile and select iCloud.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of your screen and tap Share My Location.
  4. Enable the Share My Option and close the Settings app.

Once you enable this feature, restart your device. This quick trick should allow you to broadcast your location on compatible services.

Note – If you are not able to see your friend’s location on your device, you should ask them to follow these steps on their iPhones. Make sure they enable this feature using above guide.

2. Turn on Wi-Fi

Have you turned off Wi-Fi connectivity on your iPhone? Turn it on again!

Even though this feature should work with any network connectivity, some users have noticed different behavior on their devices. It only works when Wi-Fi is on.

So, if you are facing a similar iMessage issue, do try to activate Wi-Fi and see if it makes any difference to the problem.

3. Update iOS Software

iOS updates help a lot in getting rid of previous bugs and errors on your devices.

Apple releases regular software updates for iOS devices, so do check out the Settings app on your iPhone. If there is an update available, download and install it immediately.

4. Enable Location Services

The Location Services feature allows apps to use the location of users, which helps in providing the location-based services to the users.

iMessage’s location finder feature works in the same manner. Therefore, it’s necessary to enable location services on your device.

Here’s how you can activate this feature –

  1. Open the Settings app on iPhone.
  2. Go to Privacy and tap Location Services.
  3. Toggle the Location Services option to enable it on your device.

If you have not activated the Share My Location feature yet, you may do so using the option available in the same window.

5. Enable Find My iPhone & Location-based Services

Apple also recommends users to enable these services so that you can track your friend’s location without any problem.

In case you have disabled these features, turn them on again using the following guide –

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Privacy and tap Location Services.
  3. Scroll down and tap System Services.
  4. Enable all options including Find My iPhone.
  5. Close the app.

That’s it!

Now, you should not get the Location Not Available error on your iPhone.

If you still get this error on the screen, ask your friend to perform the same steps on his/her iPhone. It’s equally important to have these features enabled on their phones as well.

6. Sign-in to iCloud

Talking about iMessage’s location-finder feature, you should remember that it relies on your iCloud account.

If you have signed-out of iCloud for some reasons, your friends won’t be able to detect your location using iMessage or Find My Friends apps.

This rule applies to all your friends if you’re trying to track their locations. If they have disabled iCloud access on their iPhones, you will continue to receive the Location Not Available error on iMessage app.

So, it’s better to check these settings before trying to troubleshoot the iMessage problem with some other advanced tricks.

7. Reset iPhone Settings

Tried everything? Still having issues with iMessage’s location-finder feature? No worries!

There is one more thing you can do to fix this problem on your iPhone.

Reset your iPhone’s settings!

Once you reset the iPhone settings, the system will remove all unknown bugs and errors from your phone. It means you may also be able to fix the iMessage issue if there is any technical glitch in network or phone’s system.

Note – When you perform this step, you will also delete all your data and settings from the device. So, do take a backup on iTunes or iCloud.

Steps to follow:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll down and tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset All Settings.
  5. Enter the passcode and let the device perform its reset process.

Your device may restart a few times when you perform this task.

Now, you can try and track your friend’s location on iMessage.

Quick Checks and To-Dos:

Whenever you see this type of error on iMessage, you should perform some checks that can help you eliminate other possibilities. Sometimes, you might even fix the problem altogether.

Here’s the list for you –

  • Check network connectivity on sender as well as receiver devices.
  • Make sure there is no network outage or service issues at carrier’s end.
  • Confirm Internet connection (Wi-Fi and Cellular Network) on both iPhones.
  • Close iMessage app and reopen it after a few minutes.
  • Restart your iPhone.

Well, these are some of the things you can try to fix the Location Not Available issue on iPhone.

If you couldn’t resolve the problem with above suggestions, it could be related to hardware issues. Your device may not be working in optimum condition to receive signals from other iPhones.

In such cases, it’s always a good idea to seek an appointment with Apple’s Support team.
