What Does Reset Statistics Mean On iPhone?

When you buy a new iPhone, you come across a lot of new terms that you only get to see on Apple devices.

And if you haven’t used any iPhone earlier, you might find it a bit difficult to understand the meaning of some of these terms.

Talking about the unknown terms, we will try to find out more about another such Apple term today, that is, Reset Statistics. Yes, many people find it confusing when they see this option in the Settings app of their iPhones.

So, what does Reset Statistics mean on iPhone?

The reset statistics option allows you to reset the cellular data usage statistics on iPhone.

That’s right!

This feature is only capable of resetting the mobile data usage numbers, which is quite useful if you like to track such minute details on your device.

Here’s how you can get these statistics numbers and reset them accordingly –

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Cellular.
  3. Scroll down to the Cellular Data section.
  4. Scroll down further to the bottom of the screen and tap the ‘Reset Statistics’ option.

Once you tap the same reset request on the popup, the iOS system will remove all the previous records from the system.

So, that’s how you can get rid of all previous cellular data numbers from this stats screen.

Note – This reset step will also delete the call time (current period) stats along with the app data usage.

What happens when you reset statistics on iPhone?

As discussed above, this feature helps in clearing up old data stats from your device.

And there is nothing else it can do to your data or iPhone. So, you don’t have to worry about data loss or any such things. It’s not harmful at all.

Is it important to reset these cellular data statistics?

Not really!

It’s not mandatory to perform this task on your iPhone. In fact, you won’t even notice any difference if you fail to do it.

Although it can be quite useful to keep an eye on your data usage, you won’t find many people doing this task on their devices each month. And the reason is simple – it’s not so important.

Bonus Tip –
If you want to keep a note of cellular data usage, just use the reminder app and create a monthly reminder as per your carrier’s billing cycle.

Unfortunately, there is no other way to do it. I hope Apple provides an option to reset these statistics in future iOS updates.

Tips to optimize Cellular Data Usage

If you’re wondering why your data statistics show more than expected results, you might have to limit the data usage on your iPhone.

The carrier companies do not offer any tool or feature to control the data consumption on our devices, so you will have to make use of iPhone settings to keep it under control.

Here’s how you can keep a check on your cellular data usage –

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Cellular.
  3. Check the list of apps under Cellular Data option.
  4. Now, start disabling unwanted apps from this list.

This way you can allow carrier data usage for specific apps only.

Note – If you want to lower your data usage significantly, make sure you disable some of the following apps.

  • App Store
  • Whatsapp
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Instagram
  • Mail
  • News Apps

These are some of the apps that require a lot of mobile data to keep you updated all the time. So, it’s recommended to get rid of the unwanted apps from using your limited cellular data.

Apart from that, you will also need to look at some other options to curb down the data usage.

And one such thing is Background App Refresh.

This feature is well-known to consume a lot of cellular data without any notifications. You will never know how and where you’ve used so much data if you enable this feature on your iPhone.

So, what do you do with this feature?

Good question!

There are a couple of things that you can do to ensure limited data usage for this feature.

  1. Disable Cellular Data access to Background App Refresh
  2. Selectively offer cellular data access to some of your favorite apps to use Background App Refresh

Yes, Apple allows both these options for those who want to limit their data usage.

Here’s how you can change the settings to optimize them as per your requirements –

To turn off Background App Refresh:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General and tap Background App Refresh.
  3. Tap the same option again and select Off or Wi-Fi only option as needed.

So, there you go!

This simple tip will help you save the leakage of cellular data on your iPhone.

Now, let’s look at the second option –

To disable apps from using Background App Refresh:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General and tap Background App Refresh.
  3. Check the list of apps that use cellular data for the background refresh activity.
  4. Disable these apps accordingly.

That’s it!

Once you perform one of these two steps, you can sit back and relax. Both these steps are more than enough to control the excessive use of cellular data on your iPhone. You don’t have to do anything else to solve this mystery problem.

Over to you –

Now that you know everything about the Reset Statistics feature, you should be able to use it regularly without any issues.

I have also shared some useful tips to keep a check on your cellular data usage. So, next time, when you see something wrong with your carrier’s monthly bill, you know where to find the answers.

Along with this, you can uninstall apps that you use once in a few months or so. These apps may also be the reason behind the sudden increase in your data usage.

And if you’re still seeing inappropriate numbers in the bill, you might need to check with your service operator.
